'Family Perks', by Annemarie Boni
Take a deep breath and breathe that rich mountain air. I can hear the roar of chainsaws rumbling over this quaint valley I call home. Snow crunches beneath my feet as I walk around, admiring the displays of workmanship crafted by people that hail from all corners of the world. This weekend, Ridgway is playing host to hundreds of chainsaw carvers for the annual Chainsaw Carvers Rendezvous.
This is by far the best weekend of the year in Ridgway. The town buzzes with excitement. The streets are filled with ebullient out-of-towners and, of course, the proud Ridgway locals. Here, strangers can find small-town friendliness that meets successful business, creating a unique visiting experience. Our warm coffee shops with floor-to-ceiling, frosty glass windows and fine Italian dining help tourists and locals satisfy their appetites. The colorful Main Street buildings offer a vibrant panorama, with a soft mountain backdrop.
The natural beauty of Ridgway is enough to make the heaviest heart feel light. Frankly, I don't know how anyone could come here without feeling like they are right at home. The friendly faces, welcoming restaurants, and rural charm make Ridgway a hidden paradise during any season.
I can see bits of sawdust mixed in with the snow on the sidewalk. The ice carvings in front of the towering courthouse are slowly losing form as the afternoon sun takes its toll. I smile in anticipation of dinner tonight, in which I will dine with 200 of the most interesting people on the planet. Oh, the perks of being a Boni!
